Full time students, staff and faculty should obtain a free dial-up service provided by UCLA-BOL (Bruin On Line)
BOL has about 500 modems connected to terminal servers capable of PPP connections (Point to Point Protocol).
If you already have a software dialer such as TCPMAN for Windows 3.x or DialUp Networking for Windows95 or MacPPP/FreePPP for the Macintosh, and have all the important applications such as telnet ,ftp, eudora and netscape, then all you need to do is obtain a free BOL account.
1) First telnet to access.ucla.edu or dialup to 206 8311 and logon as newuser.
Answer the questions regarding to STUDENT OR STAFF ID and date of birth.
You will be asked to give a new username and password (twice).
2) Wait for 10-15 minutes so the server is able to build an account for you.
3) You can test it by telnet to ben2.ucla.edu.
4) To connect from home use the following phone numbers: 206 8311 (unlimited) and 825 9944 (to check e-mail or short connections)
5) The sequence to a manual login and connect to the internet (PPP) is as follows: (Use any Network Dialer such as Tcpman or MacPPP or Win95 dialer)
a) ATDT 2068311
B) Username: yourBOLusername
c) Password: yourBOLpassword
d) BruinOnLine> ppp
e) Some dialers require that you type Esc
after that the BOL server will print and IP address like 192.xx.yy.zz You are now connected to BOL and the rest of the world.
6) If you feel these instructions are not enough for you, and you need technical support to install it, then you can buy the BOL package at the UCLA computer store for an outrageous amount of $30.00. This gives you the software mentioned above and instructions for computer-challenged people.
